Accessing internet directly from a laptop

This is probably a really dumb question, but here goes: I have a home network that  I set up myself and I access the internet from my laptop through a wireless connection to a router connected to my desktop PC. I have cable internet. How do I access the internet directly from my laptop (i.e., if I take the laptop on a trip or something)? Do I need to purchase something like a separate wireless internet card or something (i.e., through Verizon or Sprint) or is there some other way to connect via my cable company?INVALID ARGUMENT***
